Suspect wounded in failed attempt to hijack vehicle allocated for G20

A suspect has been shot and wounded after attempting to hijack a vehicle allocated to the G20 Summit.

The vehicle was transporting the police’s National Intervention Unit (NIU) members who were conducting patrols in and around Johannesburg on Friday night.

The police’s NIU members were conducting patrols along Empire Road in Johannesburg when the alleged hijacker jumped onto the road and pointed at the driver with what was later discovered to be a replica firearm.

One of the officers fired a shot, wounding the suspect in the upper body.

He was later taken to hospital under police guard. He will appear in court for an attempted hijacking charge when he is fit to do so.
