Protesters arrested outside Nasrec as G20 Summit continues

Chaos has erupted just outside the vicinity of the Nasrec Expo Centre, where the G20 Summit is currently underway.

Several protesters from Operation Dudula and the uMkhonto we Sizwe party have been arrested following clashes with the police.

Violence broke out just a few minutes ago as police fired rubber bullets at protesting crowds. The incident was sparked as a protest from various organisations, including Operation Dudula and the MK Party demanded to move closer to the actual venue where the G20 summit is being held.

This comes as protestors expressed dissatisfaction after being allocated a space to protest, which is more than a kilometre away from the Summit. They say this is unacceptable, as they are too far away and their voices aren’t going to be heard by the international delegates.

Operation Dudula says their picket aims to get the attention of international delegates on the country’s challenges, including the high crime and unemployment rates, as well as illegal immigration.

Operation Dudula’s Petuina Chauke says South Africa is in crisis, and urgent intervention is needed.

“The reason why we here at G20, we want to tell the world that the security of South Africa is at stake. Crime is very high, kids and women are being killed high unemployment rate, and I’m surprised that Ramaphosa has only now declared GBV a crisis. This thing Ramaphosa, he only entertains international affairs, he doesn’t entertain South African problems.”
