Johannesburg prosecutions boss Advocate Andrew Chauke.
The Nkabinde Inquiry into the fitness of suspended South Gauteng National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Director Andrew Chauke’s fitness to hold office, has granted the NPA legal team an early adjournment until Monday, after the team raised challenges hindering their preparedness to proceed with the hearings.
Chauke is accused of failing to prosecute cases involving politically connected individuals, while leading a team of prosecutors from Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
The adjournment has once again delayed National Director of Public Prosecutions, Shamila Batohi’s testimony, after it was postponed twice earlier this week.
Inquiry leader, Judge Bess Nkabinde has warned the teams to resolve their challenges to expedite the hearings.
“And for expediency, it will be proper that you work as a team. And I do appreciate that you’re not necessarily an evidence leader. But work as a team to assist this enquiry. And we shouldn’t be going back and forth the way we have done. I think you’ve really [been] given so much indulgences. Because things have not happened the way they ought to have happened. So, I think in that spirit that we spoke about in chambers, that let us work towards a common goal. We are here to serve the country, to present evidence and to assist this inquiry,” adds Nkabinde.
