The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) has warned that making fiscal discipline a priority over social justice in the Mid-Term Budget Policy Statement will hurt the working class and poor.
The labour federation has welcomed some infrastructure investments but says reform8s must protect jobs and workers’ rights.
It wants a budget that provides job security and relief for households.
When Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana tabled the 2025 budget policy statement in Parliament on Wednesday, he said that debt was expected to stabilise at nearly 78% of the GDP this year.
FEDUSA General Secretary Riefdah Ajam says, “Government cannot ignore the shortfalls and the falling on their own sword phenomena that have taken place over the years, where they have failed to address runaway corruption, elements of not prioritising explicit spending issues, where the poor have continually been left behind, and the working class has to shoulder the burden of austerity measures. Despite the marginal improvements, the state continues to fail to address the deepening crisis that continues to confront the workers, the working class and the poor.”
