KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi
The Head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) Advocate Andrea Johnson has defended one of the investigators for being unable to do his work.
This relates to allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lt-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in Parliament that the investigator concerned was prevented to access crime intelligence information for an investigation he was doing.
Johnson is testifying before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee investigating allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption and political interference in the justice system.
“It is Mr. Padayachee who would in fact would call Lieutenant-General Mkhwanazi to let him know that he was going to be in his province. It was him who engaged with the Lieutenant-General mainly. They met. They would have talked. They had meetings and WhatsApp messages exchanges about Mr. Padayachee going down to KZN and what it is that he would require and General Mkhwanazi was always willing to assist and also to facilitate. I am not sure of what might have gone wrong because I am not aware of what might have gone wrong.”
PKTT tip-offs
Meanwhile, Johnson has denied allegations that some of the information she receives are tip-offs from her husband who is working in the police’s crime intelligence.
The Committee’s evidence leader Adv Norman Arendse is leading her evidence in chief.
“My husband was very mindful. We had a conversation about do what you need to do. That’s always been how is has been. I don’t need information from Mr. Johnson. Mr. Johnson does not have information to give. I wouldn’t have ask him to give. Pillow talk gets people killed. That’s something we have done. And it’s just been it and I know that honourable members and honourable chair it may sounds such a glib answer. It’s a true answer. If you do not have to worry, you don’t have to come back. I am aware of these allegations.”
