The people-driven political party, the Alliance of Citizens for Change (ACC) has urged government to declare a state of emergency in the Western Cape.
This comes as areas of the Cape Flats continue to experience escalating levels of gang violence.
Renewed calls for government’s urgent intervention come after 22 people were killed and 16 others injured in shooting and stabbing incidents over the weekend.

ACC president Masizole Mnqasela has described the situation as a war zone.
Mnqasela says the situation in Cape Town is not new, emphasising that it has been this way for a long time; however, government is turning a blind eye.
“And the only real solution to it is to implement the hard protocols, similar to the ones we had during lockdown, where you are going to rein in all of those very violent communities and provide tight control of movement. The primary task of any government is to provide security, safety and comfort for its residents, and if you are not able to protect citizens, the question is who must do so,” adds Mnqasela.
