PKTT’s status was not discussed in police restructure: Mathale

Deputy Police Minister Cassel Mathale says the inclusion or not of the Political Killings Task (PKTT) Team was not discussed when the new organogram of the Police Department was discussed after last year’s election. He is appearing before Parliament’s Ad Hoc committee on Tuesday.

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu had told the committee, when he appeared, that a decision was made that the PKTT would be incorporated into the murder and robbery unit. However, Mathale had a different opinion.

“Well, it might have been mentioned in passing because we didn’t in organizational structure talk about task team. It’s a team established to deal with a specific problem. Here we are talking about a structure that must define the police in the country,” says Mathale.

Mathale says more than a year later, he has not been delegated any tasks by Mchunu because they waited for him to get settled in his new position.

“The minister came into police, had to familiarise himself, quite extensive and broad, since he arrived, engaged in that process. Been busy with that. That is the reason for the delay,” Mathale added.
