Malema presses Mchunu on Matlala’s affidavit

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has questioned Police Minister Senzo Mchunu about soliciting an affidavit from attempted murder accused Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala.

Mchunu, who is on special leave, is appearing before Parliament’s Ad hoc committee, looking into allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption and political interference in the criminal justice system, made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Among others, Mkhwanazi alleged that top police officers and Mchunu are involved with criminal syndicates.

The committee has heard that Mchunu obtained an affidavit from Matlala, who faces attempted murder charges, to confirm that they have no relations.

But Malema questioned why Mchunu felt the need to get the confirmation from someone who is behind bars.

“Who you get affidavits from matters; you can’t just get an affidavit from questionable characters, especially people who are behind bars. As a Police Minister, you should know even if this is not legally wrong, you should know it will raise questions.”

“[Questions] which gave rise to this situation we find ourselves in. If you had not pursued anything from Matlala, worse in maximum prison, where it should be difficult to access him,” adds Malema.

Malema further told Mchunu that one of his contacts had been found in possession of a sensitive letter, following Mchunu’s complaints about being constantly questioned on his association with Brown Mogotsi.

Mchunu complained that he has a lot of contacts and is not being questioned on his association with them, except for Mogotsi.

Mogotsi is at the centre of Mkhwanazi’s allegations that he was in possession of a classified letter from the minister instructing the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team.

“None of those people you have as your contacts have ever claimed to have received a letter of the 31st of December from you. None of those people you have as your contact that we are not questioning you about have never claimed that they have asked money from Matlala to buy a table for you for the ANC dinner here in Cape Town on January 8th,” questioned Malema.

“None of those people in your contacts have ever claimed to Matlala that issue that has been troubling you, of PKTT, that has been abusing you, is being dissolved? I’ve got a letter here,” he adds.
