Court orders Zuma to repay R28.9 mln in state-funded legal fees

Former President Jacob Zuma has been ordered to pay back R28.9 million spent by the state on his personal legal fees related to the 1990’s Arms Deal.

The Gauteng High Court division in Pretoria ordered the former president to pay money accumulated over 20 years, including interest, within 60 days.

Failure to pay will result in his assets or pension fund to be attached.

Zuma’s legal team had argued that the funds were paid to his legal teams based on the government’s own legal advice.

Judge Anthony Millar granted permission to the state attorney to seek a right of execution of immovable or movable assets if he fails to pay.
