Mchunu denies allegations that Matlala organised a dinner for him

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has denied that controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala organised a dinner on his behalf.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanzi made these allegations during his testimony before the Ad Hoc Committee investigating allegations he made in July. These were about criminal infiltration, corruption and political interference in the justice system.

Mchunu, who has been placed on special leave, has been questioned about the alleged dinner during the African National Congress’s (ANC) January 8 Statement in Cape Town.

He says,” I am saying I never asked for anyone to organise a dinner whatsoever for me during that period, and to be specific, I never asked Brown Mogotsi to organise any dinner for me for whatever reasons. I didn’t.”

Mchunu also testified that the first time he met with his Chief of Staff Cedric Nkabinde was when he worked at the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

He says Nkabinde was accompanied by the then IPID Head Robert McBride.

Mchunu says their visit was related to a case he was linked to while he was KwaZulu-Natal Premier.

“In 2017, when McBride and Nkabinde were at IPID. They were with IPID. Yes.”

Evidence leader Adv Norman Arendse SC: Did they come to your house, to your home?

Mchunu: Yes at Empangeni after receiving this letter.

Arendse: And this after when you were no longer the premier of the KZN?

Mchunu: No, I was no longer.
