National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola testifies before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, September 22, 2025.
Political analyst Dr Dale McKinley says National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola attempted to abdicate responsibility for the disbandment of the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team.
Masemola appeared before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria on Monday to testify about the disbandment of the team.
The issue is at the centre of an investigation into allegations of criminality, political interference and corruption in the criminal justice system.
Masemola said the embattled Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu, ordered the disbandment of the task team, describing his actions as a total encroachment on his constitutional authority.
However, McKinley suggests that Masemola might not be entirely blameless in this matter.
He says, “We don’t have all the facts in this particular instance so it’s going to play itself out, but if for example, General Masemola is making these kinds of allegations and saying it’s really the ministers fault, he didn’t know that he wanted to disband this political task team and everything else, the question is where the operational people in those positions, like the commissioner himself doing their jobs and the answer in this case is probably not.”
McKinley says, “So I think we have to also look at both sides of this picture, it’s not just politicians interfering, it’s those who are public servants, who themselves might not be doing their job and then try to wiggle their way out of it once they’re caught.”
