National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola testifies before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on 22 September 2025.
National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has disputed Police Minister Senzo Mchunu’s statement that the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) was ineffective.
Masemola is giving testimony at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into the disbandment of the task team.
Masemola says the statement from Mchunu is “completely false”, adding that if the PKTT was ineffective, then he wouldn’t have approved its budget.
“Hence my astonishment when I learned that the minister had issued a directive to me to implement his decisions to disband the PKTT. I am convinced that if the minister had made himself available for a briefing and engaged me with an open mind prior to issuing the directive, he would not have disbanded the PKTT.”

Meanwhile, Masemola has highlighted the success of the task team at Fort Hare University in the Eastern Cape.
The National Commissioner says he was the one who gave instructions for the team to intervene at the institution.
Last Week, KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi testified that the task team attained a lot of success in the province and was roped in to help in the Eastern Cape and Gauteng.
Masemola says, “With the dockets at Fort Hare University there have been arrests made. Those cases are still at court if not yet finalised because the trial of such cases takes long.”
