Mbalula urges ANC councillors to stay united

African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General, Fikile Mbalula has urged discipline and unity among Johannesburg councillors ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections.

Speaking at the party’s regional councillor report-back meeting in the south of Johannesburg, Mbalula said the meeting forms part of the ANC’s broader plan to strengthen local government and service delivery. He also defended President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent remarks on municipal performance.

ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula called on councillors to show discipline and remain focused on serving communities, saying the task of keeping the ANC strong rests on their shoulders.

“It was not going to be a shock that after 30 years there will be others who look sideways and forget where we come from. Unfortunately, the task to serve and to keep the ANC alive. This vehicle of the people is on your shoulders. You must not look elsewhere. There is some board who’s going to come and do this work. The moment we’re in need of unity, you must not all the time look at other comrades and think you can rise at their weaknesses,” says Mbalula.

Mbalula said the progress of the action plan laid out at the report-back will be measured in three and six-month sessions to hold party structures accountable.
