SAMWU workers on a protest march
SAMWU in Free State has called on Mangaung Metro Municipality to halt the unilateral implementation of the shift system and engage in formal consultation with organised labour.
This comes after the suspension of more than 30 workers for defying the implementation of the shift system.
SAMWU has won the case against the metro in the Labour Court on behalf of over 280 of its members. The court ordered Mangaung Metro to reinstate workers’ terms and conditions of employment as they existed before August 1, 2025.
The order also interdicts the implementation of the shift system.
SAMWU insists that it has exhausted all internal avenues for resolution, but the Mangaung Metro persisted in implementing measures that violate labour relations.
The metro has filed for leave to appeal the judgment.
Meanwhile, SAMWU in Tshwane has threatened another strike if a decision to grant a 5% salary increase to councillors is not reversed.
This follows the majority vote by Tshwane Councillors last week, in favour of the increase and added benefits.
The union says it’s an insult to municipal workers, who are still waiting for salary increases of 3.5% and 5.4% owed to them.
