Mkhwanazi praises political task team’s arrest of Molefe, Matlala

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will continue to testify before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry when it resumes its public hearings in Pretoria on Thursday morning.

On Wednesday, he said the intervention of the KwaZulu-Natal political killings task team in Gauteng led to the successful arrests of Katiso Molefe and Vusimusi ‘Cat’ Matlala.

Molefe has been linked to the murder of DJ Sumbody, whose real name was Oupa Sefoka, while Matlala is facing three charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and money laundering.

Mkhwanazi says the contribution of the task team to the fight against serious crime cannot be under-estimated.

“So both of these individuals have been charged with serious offences for which harsh sentences will probably be imposed if imposed. So it is my considered view that the secondment of these ten members from the political killings task team was correct. The decision that we made to release them has got us results in terms of assisting in dealing with organized crime,” explains Mkhwanazi.

Meanwhile, the South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says firearms allegedly linked to Matlala and Molefe can be connected to 18 serious murder and attempted murder cases.

Matlala is currently facing three attempted murder charges for the foiled hit on socialite Tebogo Thobejane, taxi boss Joe Sibanyoni and Dj Vettys.

Mathe was speaking outside the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court, north of Johannesburg, where Matlala was denied bail and the case was postponed to October 7.

Mathe says more charges could be added against Matlala at a later stage.

“We have three firearms in police custody that we have seized. It’s the one AK-47, and the two pistols. In terms of the case of Sibayoni, we have linked the attempted murder to that one AK 47 that can also be linked to the Aman Swart case, the DJ Sumbody and his two bodyguards’ case, the Don Tindleni, as well as the DJ Vintos murder.”
