KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has told the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry that his July press briefing was aimed at highlighting challenges faced by the police in the country.
Mkhwanazi is the first witness to take the stand at the commission underway in Pretoria.
The commission is looking into allegations of corruption within the law enforcement agencies following Mkhwanazi’s allegations.
“Commissioner, on the 6th of July, when I made this address before the South Africans, it was because I wanted to inform the public about the level of challenges that we’re experiencing as a South African police service in relation to the work we do as a police, which involve criminality and the political interference on the work that we do as the police, which will also include corruption within the value chain of the justice system which we are part of as law enforcement.”
Live stream proceedings of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry:
The first phase will mainly comprise Mkhwanazi’s testimony, while the second phase will consist of witnesses that include Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola.
Motau says in phase three, Mkhwanazi will be recalled back, where his testimony will be tested.
He adds that if the allegations of corruption within law enforcement agencies are proven to be true, then public trust in crucial institutions will be eroded.
“And for that reason, the truth, or rather the truthfulness of those allegations, needs to be proven, understanding the limited time within which the President has allocated the Commission to undertake its task.”
