FILE | Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa addresses Parliament.
Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has told Parliament that he will soon announce his department’s plan to address the surging electricity tariffs.
The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) is responsible for determining Eskom’s electricity tariffs.
Ramokgopa says the increase in the cost of electricity is too high.
He says, “I am on record having admitted that the cost of electricity is high and undermines the competitiveness of the economy and it erases the disposable income of households. I will come back to the committee and also to the country to announce the measures that we are going to be taking to address the runaway costs of electricity.”
