The South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC) TV Park building in Auckland Park, Johannesburg.
The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) says it supports the decision taken by the Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Solly Malatsi to appoint a private company to come up with a viable funding model for the SABC.
The Minister announced on Friday last week that BMIT had been appointed.
Malatsi said he chose the company because of its track record in expertise of research on economic modeling including broadcasting market analysis.
In the recent past, Malatsi was criticised by some members of the Portfolio Committee on Communications for withdrawing the SABC Bill.
Malatsi said the bill did not adequately address the issue of a credible funding model that will steer the public broadcaster to success.
Some critics have also expressed concern about the Bill allowing for political interference in the public broadcaster.
ACDP Deputy leader Wayne Thring says they will support any attempt that seeks to provide financial future stability in the public broadcaster.
“It is under these circumstances that the ACDP would support the appointment of a private company to develop a new funding model for the SABC. Additional we support the withdrawal of the SABC Bill and call for the fast tracking of a Bill that is commensurate with the times and needs of the broadcaster.”
