The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) says the Madlanga Commission into alleged police corruption is a waste of taxpayers’ money.
The commission is due to start its public hearings on Wednesday, while the MK Party is set to challenge the legality of the commission before the High Court in Pretoria on Thursday.
The party claims the commission will compromise state’s security.
The commission was established to investigate threats to national security following KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s allegations of serious corruption in the criminal justice system.
“Why do you need a judicial commission of inquiry where you’re going to have an acting judge presiding over a matter that affects his peers? We are saying that it can’t be constitutional. Even the process followed when appointing Firoz Cachalia. Having a judicial commission interferes with police work and these commissions of inquiry yield nothing else but recommendations that have no tangible outcomes and no one has ever been held accountable. I mean, there’s R149 million that’s going to be pumped into this of taxpayers’ money, and this could go into billions like the Zondo commission,” says MK party Spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela.
