SA citrus industry eyes Saudi market amid US tariff hurdles

South Africa’s citrus industry is exploring new markets in Saudi Arabia as exporters navigate tariff challenges in the US market.

The Citrus Growers Association of Southern Africa says a recent trade mission to the Middle East country with the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition has opened promising doors.

The visit comes as the two-day Citrus Growers Development Chamber Indaba ended in Boksburg on Friday.

Following a trade mission to Saudi Arabia, Chief Executive of the Citrus Growers’ Association Boitshoko Ntshabele says the Middle Eastern country’s location makes it an attractive hub that could unlock significant growth opportunities for the industry.

“Easy access to the eastern part of Europe, but also good access to China, India, and the rest of the Southeast Asian market. So huge growth opportunities for us with lots of people. If you think of China, you think of India, both countries combined, 2.9 billion people.”
