Municipalities must attract investment to create jobs: Ramaphosa

African National Congress (ANC) President Cyril Ramaphosa says municipalities must be an attractive destination for investment in order to create job opportunities.

Experts say politicisation of local government and poor-quality councillor candidates are some of the factors for the collapse of service delivery at municipalities across the country.

Ramaphosa earlier said there’s a need for real radical solutions to deal with issues affecting local government in the country.

He was speaking at the opening of the ANC Special NEC meeting in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni.

“One of the key functions of our municipalities is to promote economic growth by creating conducive environments for investment and business development. The dictum of the people, for the people, and by the people is best expressed at the local government level, as that structure is the closest level of government to the citizens of our country, ensuring direct participation in government,” he says.
