The Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) has welcomed Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi’s approval of an inquest into the deaths of five children killed by the apartheid army in 1993.
The children, aged between 12 and 17, were gunned down at the Mthatha home of PAC activist Sigqibo Mpendulo.
They were preparing for their final exams when soldiers stormed the house and opened fire. The South African Defence Force later issued a statement claiming responsibility for the attack.
PAC President Mzwanele Nyhontso says the party is concerned about the slow pace of apartheid-era inquests and prosecutions.
“We also hope that this inquest will bring closure to the families of the deceased. We also hope that for the first time, we will be able to know who pulled the trigger and killed these children in that house. We also hope that we will know who collaborated with them and led them straight to the house where these kids were sleeping, so we are hoping for the best.”
