NCC to visit KZN businesses to check Consumer Protection compliance

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) says it will make another surprise visit to KwaZulu-Natal businesses to ascertain compliance with the Consumer Protection Act (CPA).

Last week, the Commission conducted compliance inspections in Pinetown, Pietermaritzburg, Durban CBD, Springfield, Inanda, Umlazi, and Pavilion Mall in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) where it uncovered widespread non-compliance in terms of product labelling which contravenes the Section 24 of the CPA.

The inspections, which were conducted jointly with law enforcement agencies such as the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications, are part of the NCC’s efforts to ensure that unsafe and expired goods are removed from the shelves.

According to the NCC spokesperson Phetho Ntaba, in some cases, they found that goods were labelled in foreign languages, and some were sold after their sell-by dates.

Ntaba says another unannounced visit to KZN is on the cards.

Ntaba further adds that the intention is to find suppliers relaxed as they seek to experience what South African consumers are exposed to on a daily basis when they transact or interact with suppliers.

“So, we will go back to KwaZulu-Natal, to visit the same stores, the same areas and of course, where we still see that there is no compliance or they have moved a needle a bit, we will definitely engage with them. In some instances, we might issue compliance notices, but where we see that there are gross contraventions, we will definitely investigate those suppliers and take them to the Consumer Tribunal,” says Ntaba.
