The Democratic Alliance in Tshwane says the Metro has failed to remove illegal structures or address relocation. This is despite Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber’s law enforcement operation in Plastic View and Cemetery View informal settlements in Pretoria East earlier this year.
Residents of Pretoria East have been complaining about this particular informal settlement for years. It’s allegedly predominantly dominated by illegal immigrants. We’ve joined this operation with Home Affairs, SAPS and TMPD. One by One. @CityTshwane pic.twitter.com/2kNHvZFvqa

The party says that following Schreiber’s action to deport undocumented foreign nationals, the municipality had the opportunity to demolish unoccupied structures and prevent reoccupation.
DA Tshwane Spokesperson for Housing and Human Settlements, Shaun Wilkinson, says the Metro’s inaction has allowed the problem to persist, burdening residents and ratepayers.
“Equally troubling is the fact that land has been earmarked with a wayleave already granted to relocate South African citizens currently living in Cemetery View and Plastic View. The project was due to start on 1st of July 2025, but has not yet started. This relocation is the final roadblock to restoring Pretoria East to stability, safety, and lawful land use.”
