Musina Municipal Council split over Municipal Manager’s suspension

The Musina Municipal Council in Limpopo is split over the suspension of Municipal Manager, Nathaniel Tshiwanammbi. The special council sitting held last week resolved to suspend Tshiwanammbi on alleged corruption relating to the extension of the contract of a security company.

Opposing the suspension, Mayor Godfrey Mawela, wrote a letter to Tshiwanammbi, and informed him that he remains the appointed Municipal Manager, as the executive committee did not sanction the suspension.

On the contrary, ANC councilor and Chief Whip, Fistos Mafela, says all councillors were given an opportunity to vote in council and some decided to abstain.

“If the Speaker divides the house and you choose to abstain or not to vote your vote is not counted. We also want to remind the mayor that on August 19, he signed the suspension letter. Councillors must know the decision of the council is binding on all of us whether you attended council or not,” says Mafela.

Opposition parties, the EFF and the DA do not recognise Tshiwanammbi’s suspension. They say proper processes have not been followed.

DA caucus leader, Mashudu Mariba, says, “We could not support the motion for the suspension of the municipal manager but, what we are going to do in the coming council [meeting] is to move the motion of no-confidence to the Speaker and the Chief Whip.”

The infighting among ANC councillors at several municipalities in Limpopo has been going on for some time. Municipalities affected by factionalism include Mogalakwena, Lephalale, Makhado and Modimole-Mookgophong.
