Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga.
Some Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) have expressed concern about the government’s figures on the employment of people with disabilities.
This comes after Minister of Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities Sindisiwe Chikunga revealed the number of employed people with disabilities.
In a written parliamentary reply, Chikunga says the public sector has employed 0.95% of people living with disabilities compared to 1.2% in the private sector.
Erica du Toit from the Western Cape Association of and for Persons with Disabilities says, the number of the workforce of people living with disabilities in the public sector might not be a true reflection.
“South Africa has failed to achieve the initial 2% target of people with disabilities in the workplace, and we are still there today that target has not been reached. Even though the target percentage has actually been increased, we as an organisation have developed tools and are implementing them in order to correctly identify people with disabilities who require those skills in order to become gainfully employed.”
