A four-year-old girl from Eldorado Park in Johannesburg who died after being physically and sexually assaulted, allegedly by her father, will be laid to rest on Tuesday.
Her father is facing multiple charges, including murder, rape, assault and child abuse.
Her mother, who initially opened a case, now also faces charges of murder and failing to report sexual offences against her child.
Both parents appeared in the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where they abandoned their bail applications.
According to police, the child sustained head injuries, bruises and a swollen eye.
The accused allegedly assaulted both the girl and her two-year-old brother, who is now in the care of social workers.
The case has sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for stronger child protection measures.
