Former South African Defence Minister and former Speaker of the National Assembly Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula appears in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court, April 4, 2024.
The corruption case of former National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has been postponed to the 21st of November.
The High Court in Pretoria granted the postponement after her defence team requested more time to study the docket, which was only handed to them last week.
Mapisa-Nqakula faces 12 counts of corruption and one of money laundering, linked to her tenure as Defence Minister between 2016 and 2019.
She is accused of receiving about R4.5 million in bribes from defence contractor Nombasa Ntsondwa-Ndhlovu, in exchange for facilitating tenders with the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).
Her lawyers say they need additional time to issue subpoenas for bank statements and to consult with their client before possibly making representations to the National Director of Public Prosecutions.
Mapisa-Nqakula’s council Advocate Cronjé Kriel says they have received the disclosure.
“We need to peruse the docket to take instructions, and then there are further subpoenas that we need to issue for information back statements and so that will take approximately six weeks to finalise. We would therefore request that the matter be postponed at your discretion until the 21st of November 2025 to finalise the pre-trial issues,” says Kriel.
