IFP supporters
The IFP has retained ward 23 of the Abaqulusi Municipality at Vryheid in the north of KwaZulu-Natal in a by-election, in the process widening its margin of support.
Yesterday’s by-election was held after IFP ward councillor, XJ Zungu passed away in April this year.
According to the IEC, the IFP secured 51% of the votes in the by election.
The IFP has increased its support in the ward from 37.5% of the votes in the 2021 municipal elections, while ANC support decreased from 33% to 21%.
The MK Party came third in the by-election with 18% of the votes.
IEC provincial manager of electoral operations, Dr. Khulekani Zulu says the IFP won by-election with 1 559 votes.
“3 030 voters voted out of 5 520 registered voters, which accounts for 55,29%. The by-election ward winner was the IFP candidate Khulekani Vincent Myeni who got 1 559 votes.
There were no objections received after we finished counting the votes.”
