Scopa chair Zibi says govt must deal with corruption with urgency

Rise Mzansi leader and Scopa chairperson Songezo Zibi has called on the government to exercise a sense of urgency in dealing with corruption and lawlessness in the country.

Zibi says people’s faith in democracy is declining as the need for decisive action against corruption grows.

He said this during the 2025/2026 Presidency Budget Vote before the National Assembly in Parliament that took place in Cape Town today.

“Yes, numerous cases are in court but what frustrates South Africans is that it takes so long for those responsible to be charged. Let alone to be sent to prison. It sends a message that our systems of accountability are paralyzed against those who have power or have proximity to it. An increasing number of people speak of their preference for a military dictatorship in our country. Because they believe it won’t be constraint by due process and will deliver the urgency they so deeply crave,” says Zibi.
