The ANC in Gauteng has distanced itself from allegations that some of its members are engaged in criminal activities.
Provincial Task Team Coordinator Hope Papo says the party is aware of claims that there are corrupt councillors in the ANC.
Papo was speaking during a media briefing in Johannesburg, where he condemned the recent killings of ward councillors and government officials.
Papo further revealed that some ANC councillors have been receiving threatening messages and municipalities should take action.
“That’s why we want a consolidated report on all of this because those cases have been reported, the investigations started. Why are there no breakthroughs in terms of the investigations? The decision of the Provincial Task Team said the convener and the premier must engage.
We are aware of some of the councillors who would report to their chief whips about that and municipalities must take proactive actions to make it safe for public representatives, to ensure that all public representatives in their jurisdictions have security so they’re able to serve communities.
But the police themselves need to do risk assessments in that space. You can’t increase security for public representatives when you’ve not done a risk assessment as to why people would threaten a public representative.”
