The woman in court for alleged baby snatching at a mall in Cape Town.
The 37-year-old woman who allegedly abducted a newborn baby from a Bellville mall in Cape Town over the weekend will apply for bail on the 10th of July.
The woman made a brief appearance in the Bellville Magistrate’s court on Thursday. She faces two charges, one of kidnapping and another of defeating the ends of justice.
The suspect allegedly lured the mother, 25-year-old Imaan Sharmar, to the mall for a workshop on support for young mothers.
Sharmar told SABC News that en route to the mall, the suspect gave her a cold drink that could have been spiked.
She says that when they were at the mall, she felt nauseous and went to the bathroom, leaving her baby with the suspect.
The suspect allegedly made off with the baby using an e-hailing service.
Family members and relatives of the baby’s mother have all gathered in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court for the suspect’s first appearance.
The infant was kidnapped from a Bellville shopping mall on Saturday but was found unharmed and returned to his mother two days later.
Earlier, the media had been granted permission to cover the court appearance.
