Malema criticises Eastern Cape’s slow flood response in Mthatha

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has slammed the Eastern Cape government over what he describes as its slow response to assisting flood victims in Mthatha.

Malema visited the flood-stricken area to see firsthandthe effects of the floods on the affected communities.

He also visited the funeral service of one of the flood victims, 14-year-old Siyavuya Mkatshane, at Mbholompo village.

Malema said they will monitor how the funds meant for the victims are used.

He has also promised to assist the residents with their basic needs.

“This is a very painful situation that the people of Mthatha have experienced, and the response of the government has not been very exciting because we have lost a lot of lives, which could have been saved had the army and the emergency services intervened timeously. But we are here now, and we are going to hold hands with the centres to make sure that we restore the lives of these people. The centres are doing well. The managers, under very difficult circumstances, are trying their level best,” says Malema.
