Fresh approach needed for foot-and-mouth crisis in KZN

Meat production organisation, Meat Naturally Africa, is calling for a fresh approach in tackling the foot-and-mouth outbreak. Many farmers especially in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) are being crippled by the outbreak.

The organisation, in partnership with the KZN Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, launched a livestock auction in an effort to cushion farmers who’ve been severely impacted.

The outbreak of the foot-and-mouth disease forced farmers to halt the sale of cattle in a number of districts.

“This concept of taking the auction where the people and animals are truly the admission that people want to do better, for people being incentives to do better, for people not breaking permit restrictions, for people engaging in agricultural practices,” says the organisation’s executive member, Caroline McCann.

McCann says this is the way of the future and if we all committed to working together, he completely believes we can unlock the opportunities that are in KZN.
