Nkomazi Municipality in Mpumalanga informed workers that they will not receive full salaries.
Employees of the Nkomazi Municipality in Mpumalanga have downed tools over salaries.
They allege that management informed them that they will not receive their full salaries this month-end due to severe financial constraints.
The workers are demanding their full salaries, including overtime and third-party payments such as medical aid.
Independent Municipal & Allied Trade Union branch chairperson Ernest Sitiba says most workers depend on overtime payments for survival.
“Without these benefits, then our workers are bankrupt. They cannot be able to provide for their families. Because remember, they’ve got debts which they’ve got to settle. So, if they’re only getting this so-called basic salary, it makes life difficult for them to settle their bills.”

Meanwhile, Nkomazi municipality spokesperson Mbuso Malale has admitted that the municipality could not pay employee benefits this month. He, however, dismissed the workers’ allegations that the municipality is bankrupt.
“They only manage to pay basic salaries, which is what is enshrined in our contracts with the employer. Yes, the reason being that the 30th of June is the end of the financial year. So, our fiscal is dry, and we promise that come the 4th of July, all that is due to us will be paid.”
