The Public Service Commission (PSC) says government owes over R16 billion in leave payouts to nearly 190 000 employees.
These workers were employed in the public service sector before July 2000.
PSC Commissioner Anele Gxoyiya says the total capped leave liability represents approximately 14% of the total public service workforce, most of whom are older workers in the education and health sectors.
Gxoyiya says, “When we say it is a contingent liability, we don’t mean that there is money that has been spent, but what we ordinarily mean for is that for every employee who was employed before the 1s July 2000 who has saved on that leave it means the state owes that money.”
