President Cyril Ramaphosa and Deputy President Paul Mashatile chaired the first cabinet meeting under the Government of National Unity (GNU) on July 9, 2024.
Public Governance expert, Prof Purshottama Reddy, says the Government of National Unity (GNU) cannot be expected to solve all of South Africa’s problems one year after its establishment.
He spoke during a webinar that the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in Durban hosted yesterday. June marks the first anniversary of the GNU.
Reddy says, “Firstly, the Government of National Unity has been in office for about a year. Now, we cannot expect the Government of National Unity in its intended lifespan to fix all the rules of the country which are unrealistic.”
“However, it has made a good start, bearing in mind that it takes time before legislation, policy and framework can be implemented,” he adds. –Reporting by Taresh Harreeparshad and Hoosen Ebrahim.
