More should be done to fight crime in the country: Buthelezi

Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) Deputy President, Chief Mzamo Buthelezi, says the law must be tough on criminals who are continuing to kill people with impunity.

He was speaking at the memorial service of IFP MP and Deputy Chief Whip, Khethamabala Sithole, in Germiston in eastern Johannesburg last night.

Sithole was gunned down last week while doing party work at the Buyafuthi hostel in Katlehong on the East Rand.

Two other people were also wounded during the shooting.

Two of the alleged attackers have since been arrested.

They appeared in court yesterday and are set to apply for bail next week.

Buthelezi says more should be done to fight crime in the country.

He says, “I think as a country we are not doing enough to deal with crime, because now we don’t fear the law. I think we need to go to a drawing board and see what is this that makes people not to fear the law.”

“As communities and lawyers, we need to change, we cannot protect and they prioritise money. It shows that there is something fundamentally wrong with our criminal justice system,” addsButhelezi.
