Ramaphosa advised to ‘stand his ground’ ahead of Trump meeting

International Relations expert, Prof. Bheki Mngomezulu, says he is concerned for President Cyril Ramaphosa ahead of his meeting with his United States (US) counterpart, Donald Trump.

Mngomezulu was responding to Trump’s confirmation that he will be meeting the country’s delegation led by Ramaphosa next week.

On Monday, the US administration welcomed 49 white South Africans who were granted refugee status, purporting them to be victims of racial discrimination and genocide.

The SA government dismissed the claims as misinformation.

Mngomezulu says Ramaphosa should stand his ground as Trump is expected to be armed with lots of false information.

He says, “In our own context, our President was quick to respond to issues that pertained the American politics where the President of America had made comments in the media.”

“If our President doesn’t contain himself, we might see a worse situation than we saw when President Trump hosted President Zelenskyy. So therefore, I would maybe suggest that the advisors of the President and the President himself go there having well prepared himself for any eventuality, because President Trump has a way of making sure that he ridicules his counterparts from other countries.” Mngomezulu adds.
