uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party convenor in KwaZulu-Natal Willies Mchunu says the party is very excited about beating the Democratic Alliance (DA) to win their first local government ward in the eThekwini metro this past week.
The by-election was held in ward 110 in Durban North, which includes areas like Sunningdale.
The MK Party candidate Mandla Biyela received 38,9% of the votes.
Mchunu says the party is making inroads across the province. “You will see that we are winning. Where we have lost, we have lost with dignity. So we are excited. We are excited … our first big win was our ward 2 in Richmond. We’re going all out to win a ward from the DA. Because our main adversaries, political adversaries, are the DA. So if we win against them, excitement is very big,” adds Mchunu.
Residents in Ward 110 say service delivery is more important to them than which party won the by-election.
One resident says, “The bottom line is that service delivery is of priority. You get things like a shortage of water, then you don’t get electricity. There are so many other issues … you look at the roads – there are so many potholes.”
“Southgate as a community is a very close-knit community. And the next day after the elections, much was discussed that we don’t know who to report to,” adds another one.
