Parties’ proposals on how to generate revenue have merit: Godongwana

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana says various political parties’ proposals on how to generate revenue have some merit.

Godongwana joined President Cyril Ramaphosa and other dignitaries in a meeting with the Eastern Cape government in Gqeberha today.

This is the second day of Ramaphosa’s visit to the city.

The aim of the meeting is to improve intergovernmental relationships as well as discuss budget issues, including how more revenue can be generated for the country.

Godongwana says, “Parliament has said to us, give us 30 days for political parties to make submissions on alternative sources of revenue other than VAT (Value-Added Tax). Now we are looking at the proposals being sent from different parties and we are waiting for Parliament to give guidance as to how to respond to those proposals. It’s only then I can tell you if they will make sense or not.”
