African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula says the party had not taken a decision on the future of the Government of National Unity (GNU).
This after Democratic Alliance (DA), which is the ANC’s biggest GNU partner, did not vote to support the fiscal policy framework last week.
Various ANC officials have since called for the DA to exit the GNU stating that the party cannot play opposition and still want to remain in government when they did not support the budget.
However, the DA has made it clear that the party is still committed to the GNU and open to a resolution on the current budget impasse.
Briefing the media on the outcomes of the National Working Committee (NWC) meeting in Johannesburg today, Mbalula says the ANC will continue engaging with political parties.
“What we have agreed to do is reset the button by way of ensuring that this GNU going forward have got to be governed by who. Not just a statement of intent. What rules govern us and members of the government of national unity. The fact of the matter is that the ANC does not have an absolute majority to govern.”
