Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi joins President Cyril Ramaphosa, Police Minister Mr Senzo Mchunu, South African Police Service National Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola at the Police Summit underway at Emperors Palace Conference Centre, Kempton Park…
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has raised concerns about the ongoing taxi violence in the province, which has resulted in approximately 30 deaths since last month. His comments come after three men were fatally shot in Mofolo, Soweto, on Wednesday.
Lesufi was speaking at the opening of the three-day Police Summit in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, where he called on the Presidency to intervene and support law enforcement efforts.
“We cannot allow taxi associations and bosses to do as they wish in our province. Yesterday alone, three people were gunned down, bringing to 30 people who were killed in the last month alone in our province. This is enough, President! We need to demonstrate to them who’s the boss in this country. Our law enforcements are the bosses and only needs firepower to tackle this matter,” Lesufi says.
Police are investigating three separate murder cases following the latest shootings in Soweto.
The Gauteng Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety has requested Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, to provide a detailed update on investigations into taxi-related killings across the province.
This follows reports that 11 taxi operators were gunned down in Katlehong during March, with the latest incident involving three officials from the Soweto-based WATA taxi association.
Committee chairperson Bandile Masuku says, “The Provincial Government should also prioritize interventions that address the root cause of conflict, including engaging all stakeholders in the taxi industry to find lasting solutions. The Committee further calls on the Department of Roads and Transport to mediate urgently between rival taxi associations, ensuring that disputes over routes are resolved peacefully and within the framework of the law.”
