The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) to march to the City of Tshwane Offices in Pretoria today to hand over a memorandum to Mayor Nasiphi Moya demanding payment of 261 former bus drivers’ retrenchment packages.
The drivers’ employment contracts were terminated after the city’s transport service, A Re Yeng, parted ways with one of its bus operators, Tshwane Affected Operators Investments (TAOI).
Numsa says the city had promised to pay the retrenchment packages and to hire the workers following the termination of the contracts.
The union says the commitment was not confirmed in writing.
Numsa Spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola says they now understand why the city did not provide a written commitment.
“Tshwane Affected Operators Investments was actually appointed by the city to provide services for A Re Yeng and that would be to provide cleaners and security staff. When the city decided to terminate the contract, the Section 189 process commenced, there was a whole process facilitated by CCMA.”
She says, “It was during the CCMA consultations where officials from the city who participated in those consultations confirmed that they would ensure that retrenchment packages would be paid by the city. We as Numsa wanted them to put that in writing in an agreement and they refused.”
