Over 4600 acceptability certificates issued to Gauteng spaza shops

Gauteng Finance and Economic Development MEC Lebogang Maile says more than 4600 certificates of acceptability have been issued to owners of food outlets including spaza shops.

The documents have been issued since the registration deadline on Friday. They confirm the compliance of a business to basic food safety and hygiene requirements.

Addressing a media briefing in Johannesburg today, Maile says only 128 permits have been issued to foreign nationals.

He says the certificates are lower than the number of applications for registration.

Maile says, “There must be an appreciation that this was the first biggest registration process in the country since ’94. So obviously, there was going to be challenges. The most important thing is to learn and draw lessons. Learn from those lessons.” Additional reporting Tshepo Phagane.
