Johannesburg Mayor, Dada Morero addresses the Urban 20 Cycle on March 3, 2025.
Johannesburg Mayor, Dada Morero says the 8th Urban 20 (U20) Cycle is a platform to advocate urban development issues in the G20 and the United Nations (UN).
The Cities of Johannesburg and Tshwane launched the event yesterday.
The global initiative is aimed at uniting major cities to shape discussions at the upcoming G20 Summit for Heads of State and Government, set for November in Johannesburg.
Morero says the launch also highlights the need to refurbish ailing infrastructure in cities.
He has also called for alternative ways to fund municipalities.
Merero says, “In fact whatever restructuring we do, should be a benefit to residents of Joburg or rather generally to municipalities to ensure that municipalities get survived, but in that survival we should take into account the challenges of our residents.
He says, “We would not come out and say we are increasing without having engaged and also we would not increase without understanding the state of the economy. Is it responding to job creation? Is it growing to justify whether we should increase our tarrifs?”
