Poultry farmers urge govt to tackle bird flu threat

Poultry farmers have called on the Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development Department to find urgent solutions to the possible resurgence of bird flu in the country.

The South African Poultry Association has issued a warning to this effect.

Farmers are currently experiencing losses due to their chickens dying in sizeable numbers.

Fifty-one-year-old Rosinah Mohurutshane, who started poultry farming four years ago, has called on the authorities to tackle the problem before it gets out of hand.

“I don’t have broilers because I can’t afford to buy broilers. I only have layers that are only producing eggs. So now, I am depending on the layers for now. Because now I have to sell, and after selling, I have to buy feed and medication, and I also have to pay my helper. That is a problem I am faced with. So I am stressing about the flu that is coming. I don’t know what I am going to do.”
