Zille lodges urgent court bid to halt Joburg-Samwu wage deal

Democratic Alliance (DA) Johannesburg Mayoral candidate Helen  Zille has approached the court to urgently interdict the over R10 billion wage deal between the City and the South African Municipal workers Union (Samwu).

Zille says the agreement was pushed by the African National Congress (ANC) and its partners in council for political reasons.

She claims the deal will put the city’s finances at risk and take money away from basic services like water, electricity and waste collection.

Zille says, “The ANC needs Samwu to be its foot soldiers for this election, that is the reason that the ANC and its partners like the PA (Patriotic Alliance), like Al Jama-ah and like the EFF (Economic Freedom Fighters) are using your money and taking it away from basic service delivery and the capital budget to fix water and electricity.”

She adds, “They are taking that money away to pay for political favours, that is why it is called the politically facilitated agreement.”
