Deputy Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure Sihle Zikalala says the process of handing over more than 200 Welisizwe Rural Bridges is unfolding.

Zikalala, together with the MEC for Public Works and Roads, Elizabeth Mokua, handed over two completed bridges to the communities of Kraaipan and Masutlhe outside Mahikeng in the North West Province. 48 bridges will be constructed in six provinces.

The Welisizwe Rural Bridges Programme is aimed at improving safety during floods and providing access to amenities for rural communities.

“The president’s mandate to us is to construct 286 bridges throughout the country in the six provinces, which include North West, Eastern Cape, Free State, Mpumalanga and Limpopo, and KwaZulu-Natal. We have built bridges, and we continue the account on that. I came here at the end of October because the project here was stalled. We managed to unlock those projects, and we are now on implementation,” Zikalala elaborates.
