The case against a 35-year-old woman linked to the fatal shooting at the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court has been postponed to April 23, 2025, for a bail application. She made a brief appearance, following the shooting of a 50-year-old man, who was gunned down inside the court building last April 7, 2025.

The accused was apprehended on Saturday. According to the state, the woman was allegedly the mastermind.

On Tuesday a 50-year-old man believed to be a taxi owner was gunned down inside the court building. According to the state, the accused has conspired with gang members to execute the deceased. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila, says more charges could be added to the murder rap sheet.

“Her case has been postponed to the 23rd of April. One for us to get more information for bail application, for us to collect more evidential material. Three, for us to confirm the schedule. We believe at this stage it’s a schedule 6. The reason we say that is that the evidence we have now points that she organised and recruited the members of the Junky Funky Kids to assassinate the deceased who was shot in this court,” Ntabazalila explains.

The police say they have arrested a second suspect in connection with the incident. Acting Western Cape Police Commisioner, Bongani Maqashalala, says they have identified four more suspects.

“This morning we made a second arrest. The person is being questioned, and also we have identified more people. So, with time, we are going to effect more arrests. And also, to assist at the court, we have beefed up, we have increased, the numbers to ensure that the threat is neutralised. So, we have done that according to the threat that exists here. We have allowed our crime intelligence to do the threat assessment.”

Security at other courts will also be beefed up, Maqhashalala adds.

“We are going to look at others because we don’t want anything of this nature. We are going to have a discussion with justice because the access control is their responsibility. All what we do as SAPS is to ensure that there’s order in the courtrooms and also to ensure that the prisoners are secured.”

The shooting incident inside the court has raised serious concerns about security as the concerned resident Johannes Van Wyk explains.

“I was very shocked because I never expected that would happen because I was supposed to go in to get the paper, but then this happened and then I stood outside and I never went inside because I don’t know who’s next or what is next,” Van Wyk says.

The suspects will remain in custody, with the state expected to oppose the bail.
